Pierrot lunaire

In 1913, fifteen year old artist Conrad Felixmüller (Felix Müller) became acquainted with Arnold Schönberg’s Pierrot lunaire melodramas when they were performed in Dresden. Letters written back and forth between Felixmüller, Schönberg and Wassily Kandinsky were filled with debate over the graphics. Kandinsky and Schönberg found fault with Felixmüller’s metaphoric portrayals: “I will […] try my utmost to find out to what extent the objectivity of your drawing has to do with the abstraction of my music, an investigation which has not, as of yet, borne any result.” (Arnold Schönberg to Conrad Felixmüller, 12 March 1915).
