This scene of the Descent of the Cross was carved in Huamanga stone, material found in Ayacucho, Peru, and then painted and gilded. The episode shows Nicodemus and an assistant still above the stairs as the body of Christ rests on the lap of His mother. In the surrounding St. John the Baptist, Mary Magdalene and Joseph of Arimathea mourn his death.
