Piggy-back service

Referred to as piggy-back service, in this photograph trailers are loaded from trucks onto flatcars. Using both trucking and rail track cut the amount of time it took to transport goods across the country in half.

After the U.S. Civil War railroads expanded rapidly in Kansas. Traveling through the state on train was one of the safest and fastest ways to cross the country.
