There are many bone pins from the excavations at Porthester. The English word 'pin' is derived from the Latin word pinna, meaning long point. Long considered to have been used by women as hair pins, recent research has postulated that they were not really suitable to be used for the purpose, and that in fact the complex braided hairstyles worn by roman women were sewn together. If this is the case then these bone pins were probably used by both men and women as clothes fasteners.
