The Tupi Indians loved the pineapple. Pineapple is a word from their language (the Tupi) and means tufted pine. It is a tropical plant, originating from Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay. The plant belongs to the Ananas genus from the bromeliad family. The fruit is not only delicious, but also packed with vitamins. Not surprising that people soon planted the pineapple in other places. At the time of Christopher Columbus, the plant grew all over South and Central America and in the Caribbean. In Europe, the fruit was first successfully grown in greenhouses in 1720.
