A small woodcut by the Namibian artist, Joachim Voigts (1907-1994). The woodcut depicts a man fishing with a spear and the scene is reproduced from the region of the Northern most parts of Namibia in southern Africa. Short Biography: Joachim Voigts (1907-1994) was born on 20 March 1907 in Windhoek, second son of a merchant and an art teacher in Windhoek. His father Gustav Voigts descended from a Brunswick farming family and came to Namibia (then South West Africa). Joachim Voigts was schooled in Germany and studied art at the Kunstgewerbeschule Braunschweig, then at Landeskunstschule Hamburg. Returned to Namibia in 1931, and finally (after another study year in Germany) in 1937. He farmed on Okaparakaha, was interned during World War II in Andalusia and other camps (1940-1947). After his return he lived on his farm, since 1978 in Windhoek. Joachim Voigts was a prolific artist, especially in graphic art, and illustrated many books and magazines in realistic style. Voigts studied art in Germany between from 1926 to 1937 and was later interred to Spain in Andalusia during the Second World War from 1940 to 1946. In 1950, Voights was a Co-Founder of the Arts Association of South West Africa. He died on 18 June 1994.
