Pitted Megalith

Valletta, Malta

Decorated block (horizontaly lying): The front of this is carved with a strange motif, which appears to be the final degeneration of the branched volute-a rather irregular and lumpy pattern. This block is 2.35m long and once had a high stoneback, now broken. The rear has a drilled decoration in two panels, of which one is square and juts out c. 15cm beyond the second, which is a long rectangle. Both are surrounded by a raised border, the outer ends of which are broken of. At its foot and projecting about 35-40cm beyond it, is another slab which is on the same level as that which forms the base of the statue, i.e. c 15cm high, and which is decorated on the front with a series of linked diamonds.
