MILELE CONTEMPORARY LAB

A close-up of a plant from a banana tree in Nyamata (Eastern Province, Rwanda). This picture is part of the documentation of Kuuru's Art Space: Art, Humans & Universe + project in 2021 in collaboration with MILELE CONTEMPORARY LAB artists. Soil, the mother of nature. Soil, what feeds us. This is the awareness this projected wanted to raise. Soil is much more than the ground we walk on every day. It is a source for life. The project does research on Rwandan soil and shares the findings with local artists to use in their creations for a group exhibition.

During the first phase, the team traveled to different parts in Rwanda to research and collect various types of soils with different agricultural experts. While travelling, we had the honor to meet different farmers. We visited a various farms in the Bugesera district in the Eastern Region of Rwanda to collect sand and loam soil . Bugesera district landscape is flat, unlike otherparts in Rwanda (land of 1000 hills). This area has a higher day-temperature in comparison to the Rwandan average temperatures. This leads to the soil being more dry than the types we have collected.
