Habitat: Old-growth upland hammock.
Description: State Champion Tree: ht.: 129 ft.; dbh.: 44 in. (circ.: 15' 9"); dia. at base: 60 in.; age: 220 +/- 6 years; board feet: 3200 [data: A.S. Jensen, UF School of Forestry]. Proposed for site plan approval (by landowner A.W. Fletcher) 10 Apr 1978. Preserved by act of City Commission (in requiring retention of 50' x 100' buffer around tree) 17 Apr 1978. Destroyed (loss of all leaves and upper branches) by violent windstorm, 4 May 1978. Cut (by City and University crews) ca. 29 May 1978, with basal 10 ft. sectioned in 18" cuts, and next 18 ft. log preserved with bark undamaged. Log erected in Forestry breezeway ca. 2 June 1978.
