Plant Stand

A 1908 photo of Hampton’s Drawing Room shows a small stand with a square top edged with Chinese fret carving located along the south wall. This stand features a porcelain top depicting a Chinese battle scene inFamille Verte enamels and base painted in imitation of lacquer work. It is another example of imported China trade goods from the mid-19th century with a Hampton provenance. Although it is not certain that the stand was originally used in the Drawing Room, it was probably purchased by Eliza Ridgely in the 1850s. It represents her taste for the exotic and great interest in horticulture.
