San Jose photographer Andrew Putnam Hill began a campaign to prevent the logging of redwoods in the Santa Cruz Mountains (in what is now California's Big Basin Redwoods State Park) after photographing a redwood grove in 1899. He helped form the Sempervirens Club in 1900.
