This plaque commemorates the early settlers of Freetown. An unveiling event took place at the enormous and ancient Cotton Tree at the centre of Freetown. The Cotton Tree is important in the history of Freetown as it is said that the early settlers held their meetings under one. Nobody knows if this is the cotton tree where they had their meetings but it’s become a symbol of the ideal and the hopes that were bought here by the early settlers. The event was attended by some of their descendants.
This plaque was created by BBC History and is one of twenty placed around the world for the series Black and British: A Forgotten History.
