The calligraphy on the plaque of Gyeongungung Palace or the Palace of Joyful Fortune which was the former name of Deoksugung Palace, Palace of Virtuous Longevity was written by Emperor Gojong. After Empress Myeongseong was murdered by the Japanese at Geoncheonggung Palace, Palace of Heavenly Purity in Gyeongbokgung Palace or Palace of Resplendent Happiness, in 1895, the 32nd year of King Gojong's reign, King Gojong fled to the Russian legation for his safety. He ordered the renovation of Gyeongungung Palace and returned to the palace in February 1897. Since then, Gyeongungung Palace was used as the main palace during the Korean Empire.
