Richard Sieper established a foundry in 1921 to manufacture consumer products made of aluminum and also from innovative thermoplastics. Under the SIKU brand (SIeperKUnststoffe, an acronym for Sieper plastics), the company and its plastic toys was among the exhibitors at the first toy trade show in Nuremberg in 1950. In 1954, the first 32 SIKU toy models of vehicles were introduced. They were made of plastic on a scale of 1 : 60 suitable for children. With the return of the German Air Force to flight, airplane models on a scale of 1 : 250 were also introduced to the market in 1959.
