Plate and Potter's Slip Cup

The design featured on this locally made plate was achieved by using a slip cup. Potters would fill the container with slip (watered down clay) to draw patterns. This particular slip cup is marked with the initials of its unidentified owner, “JB.”

Archeologists uncovered these objects at the site of the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia during an excavation from 2000 to 2003.
