The ceramic in the Preclassic began with the precursor elements of the early classicism like polychromy, and “negative” technique decoration, among others. This plate represents the typical red over orange decoration with the design of a fish painted completely schematically, a long mouth with a forked caudal fin. The fish is painted in a darker shade than the used for the background with a black silhouette in a double line, a solid one and a broken one. Like every daily act in the life of Mayans, fishing was an activity with religious connotation. Fishers had their special god to whom they invoked and made offerings. They used nets, hooks, harpoons and had canoes to catch different sea species among which there were stingrays and sharks.Dra. Federica Sodi MirandaColaboradores: Arqlgo.
