This play set from the Holly Hobbie series represents the popular creations of artist Holly Ulinkas Hobbie. In 1967 Hobbie sold her watercolors to the American Greeting Corporation, and soon the buying public responded to the wholesome images of folksy, country girls adorned in sun bonnets, pinafores, and innocence. By the late 1970s, Holly Hobbie characters decorated more than 400 products of all kinds including children's clothing, toys, games, and, of course, dolls. The play set represents an early instance of toy makers' strategy that was perfected in the 1980s: the development of a product line of characters, their friends, families, ancillary clothing, homes and gardens, schools and scooters, pets, and pets' pets, and on and on.
