A play set demonstrates the longevity of one of the United States' most powerful advertising campaigns and mascots. Smokey Bear, AKA Smokey the Bear, has warned against the danger of wildfires since the 1940s. Although a real bear, rescured from a fire, was later named Smokey and lived at the Washington Zoo, the fictional character was represented in many different ad campaigns as well as stuffed animals and toys. In 1982 the National Printing Office made a one-act play playset, complete with masks of Smokey and his friends as well as a script and set directions. Children are encouraged to play the parts of animals as well as trees, who gather to roast marshmallows. Their campfire, another character and mask, gets out of control but is swiftly doused by Smokey. Hopefully the players will learn to be careful with fire; Smokey's friendly warning helps teach that lesson.
