The Sunshine family was originally a mom, dad, and baby sold as a set. Mattel started making them in 1974. In 1975 they made the grandma and grandpa set, and in 1978 they added a sister to the line. The dolls were made from 1974-1978. This set was used by the donor in the 1980s. She shares that the "hippie lifestyle" of the Sunshine Family was a deep contrast to her suburban upbringing, and it inspired her to play with the dolls creatively. She cites as examples using plastic bowls for doll pools, Easter basket grass for hay in the stables, and Play-Doh for making plates and cups.
