This photograph documents levelHead, an Augmented Reality (AR) game created by Julian Oliver and presented at the IndieCade Showcase @ E3 in 2008. The game combined a physical, pattern-marked cube with a digital environment, enabling players to manipulate the cube to guide a virtual character through a series of interconnected spaces.
Developed at a time when augmented reality was still an emerging technology, levelHead anticipated many of the techniques that would later become central to AR gaming and mobile applications.
levelHead received the inaugural Technical Innovation Award at the 2008 IndieCade Festival. The project is regarded as an important milestone in the evolution of AR, demonstrating the creative potential of blending physical objects with digital gameplay.
