America's Great Depression, in part, influenced children's clothing in the 1930s. For one example, frugality often prompted homemade outfits. One famous movie star is credited with influence over little girls' clothing in the 1930s--Shirley Temple. And indeed this play outfit features a very short pinafore, or overdress, similar to the short designs Temple often wore. The fabric design used in all three pieces, a multicolored print, is typical of 1930s fabric.
