This view, looking directly north, is from the top of the artist's residence, Little Parndon, in Gipps Street, East Melbourne. The house was built for von Guérard in 1862 and still stands. Von Guérard painted two further works from the same vantage point: one looking east to the Dandenongs, the other to the south-west. Both are now in private collections. The wide view from the artist's house indicates that other buildings in the area did not obstruct von Guérard's viewpoint. At this time, Little Parndon was a two-storey residence, but a third-storey extension and tower room were added in 1866. For many years, Little Parndon was the Melbourne residence of the Governor-General Lord Casey and Lady Casey, who acquired the house in the late 1930s.
