Plum Blossoms above Rocks and Wild Ducks

Ma Yuan

The Palace Museum

The Palace Museum
Beijing, China

This painting depicts steep rocks, dangling plum blossom sprays, and a flock of wild ducks swimming in an expanse of misty water. The artist delineated the facets of the rocks with slanting strokes known as axe-cuts, while fashioning the fluffy down with relaxed, short lines. The dangling, zigzagged spray is another feature of Ma's works. He was hence dubbed "Ma Yuan of the dragged spray". This painting typified Ma's one-corner composition.
The painting bears Ma Yuan's signature and four collections seals.
