Pocket Watch with Automats

1820

Museo Poldi Pezzoli

Museo Poldi Pezzoli
Milano, Italy

The watch has a gold case and a white enamel dial. On the back appears a lively scene in gold and polychrome enamel animated by automata: inside a kitchen a child, seated next to the large chimney, is turning a spit, a woman is spinning and water gushes from a drinking fountain.
Watches with automata were a feature of Swiss watch-making: they were expensive, almost refined toy timepieces for adults, and were much sought after.
