In Suzhou and other cities, elegant folding fans with calligraphy on one side and paintings on the other were given by one member of the wealthy educated elite to another. In this work on gold-surfaced paper Wen Zhengming describes some of the special joys of the days at the end of winter and the beginning of spring.
