Point La Jolla, a rocky point jutting out from the region's generally smooth and dangerous lee shire, is part of Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Park. The village of La Jolla and Mount Soledad can be seen in the background.
Point La Jolla has a special significance to the Kumeyaay who continue to refer to the area as the "Holy Land." Historically, it was used for fishing and as a base for snorkeling. On April 12, 2023, the City of San Diego requested that the California Coastal Commission approve the year-round closure of the site due to increased interactions between humans and sea lions. It remains closed.
