Polar Light' is a mural of the Sami and her reindeer (the Sami people of Arctic Europe are known for their semi- nomadic life of reindeer herding) at the end of the men’s bedroom corridor. The painting is of a journey through wilderness but a journey towards light and newness, supported by the fortitude of the animals and undertaken by the hardy, light-bearing Sami. The expedition is obviously an external one, through the Arctic tundra, but is also internal and psychological. Situated at the end of the corridor, the painting opens out the end wall of the passage, suggesting fresh horizons and hopeful outcomes with its luminous vista. It also connectd the painted world with the real world by extending the long, straight direction of the corridor, which is itself suggestive of a journey.
