Paul Gabriël is called a Hague School painter because of the nature of his oeuvre. He actually lived and worked for much of his life in Brussels, where the far younger painter Tholen of Kampen visited him in 1878. They became friends, and regularly went out painting together in and around Kampen, which is how the Kamperveen fens became part of Gabriël’s repertoire.
