Noteworthy, among the most important texts, is Hieronymus Brunschwigh's “Liber de arte distillandi” (“Kleines Destillierbuch”), dated 8 May 1500, the very rare first book in history to deal with distillation. In this work, the traditional herbarium meets the emerging technology of alchemical chemistry: Brunschwig describes the methods and tools for extracting by distillation the essences of a huge variety of plants and some animals and minerals.
