In 1939, when the Germans entered Poland, 14,000 Jews fled to Vilna. A relief program established by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (“the Joint”) in Vilna, assisted these refugees as well as the Jews of Vilna, channeling aid through local organizations.
