Polish winged hussar helmet (shishak)

A hussar pappenheimer helmet, Poland, 17th century, preserved lining. The neck-guard is composed of five lames. The edges of the cheek pieces, neck-guard, and the peak are adorned with gilded rivets. A finial at the top.

A hussar shishak was a type of helmet commonly used by the Polish hussar cavalry. It resembled the West-European pappenheimer helmets. It appeared in several versions: with a finial on the top, with a high comb, or with fan-shaped wings attached to the skull.
