Former governor of California Ronald Reagan captured the 1980 Republican presidential nomination. His success was a long-awaited victory for the conservative wing of the party. To balance the ticket, Reagan chose the more moderate George W. Bush -- one of his Republican primary opponents. The Reagan-Bush ticket easily won over a lackluster Carter-Mondale Democratic ticket.
