During her honeymoon in 1935, Doris Duke purchased nine suzanis, including this one, in India even before she conceived of building Shangri La. These embroideries, however, later became integral to her sense of display for they are seen throughout the estate. Duke continued to acquire suzanis over the years. Today there are 15 suzanis in the collection.
