Pont-Aven, France

The Pont-Aven artists were fascinated by Tremalo Chapel, which famously inspired Gauguin’s painting Le Christ Jaune (The Yellow Christ). Emile Jourdan depicts a peasant woman driving her cow home at dusk along a sunken path bordered by pollarded trees. The path forms an inverted V, drawing the viewer’s eye to the building in the centre of the painting. The chapel has a timeless look, and the painter has achieved perfect harmony between the figure and the surrounding landscape, creating a rather dramatic atmosphere that gives a spiritual dimension to the work
