During the climax of the Wednesday evening violence, thousands of protesters escaped a police cordon of Grant Park and joined a mule train down Michigan Avenue toward the Conrad Hilton Hotel. Led by civil rights leader Ralph Abernathy, the Poor People's Campaign simply got caught in the rush of events.
