Poplars in the Sun

Monet left several series of works that depict the same motif with changes in light, pigment or composition. He was fascinated by the stand of poplars along the left bank of the Epte River near Giverny, and he set down their form several times during the spring and summer of 1891. The special characteristics of this work are the three large poplars shown in the foreground of the image, and the bright lively impression given by the blue of the sky, the white of the clouds and the green and rose color of the trees. - Object notes (Japanese): 光の戯れと反映を何よりも深く追求したモネは、同一のモティーフを光や色彩あるいは構図を変えて何回か描くという意味での「連作」をいくつも残している。1890年に着手された「積みわら」、1892-94年の「ルーアン大聖堂」、晩年の「睡蓮」などがその例であり、そこではほぼ同一のモティーフを、朝、白昼、夕方などの異なった時刻において、さまざまな光の効果の下に描き出している。本作品は、こうした連作の一つ「ポプラ並木」のうちの一点である。ジヴェルニーにほど近いエプト川左岸のポプラ並木はモネを魅了し、1891年の春から夏にかけて画家は幾度もその姿を画布に描いた。それら一連の作品は、S字型の曲線を空に描き出すポプラ並木を扱っている点ではほぼ共通しているものの、構図と画面効果は微妙に異なっている。この作品においてとりわけ特徴的なのは、大きく前景に描かれた3本のポプラであり、青い空と白い雲、緑とばら色の生みだす晴れやかな印象である。同一構図の作品が他に数点存在することが知られている。（出典: 国立西洋美術館名作選. 東京, 国立西洋美術館, 2006. cat. no. 74）
