In this painting, the artist shows how mechanically-propelled vessels coexisted alongside the big merchant sailing ships. The arrival of the first steamships heralded the demise of sail power, but for many years afterwards steamships were still built with masts and rigging, to fall back on in the case of engine failure. Thus a new type of vessel was created: the combo sail-steamship.
