Portrait of a monk

Fin époque Muromachi, époque de Momoyama, 16e siècle

In a subtle game of mutual interest, bonds between representatives of Buddhist schools and of the government have been woven and undone over time. Buddhism still permeates many aspects of Japanese society, from artistic practice to mental attitudes. Inside Japanese temples you frequently see portraits of the founders and effigies of the “patriarchs”. The obvious realism of their expression can only inspire admiration and respect in the faithful for these ascetics who have witnessed various changes in doctrine and asceticism.
