Portrait Gerhart Hauptmann

Gerhart Hauptmann is considered to be the most important German representative of Naturalism. His socio-critical plays are written in everyday language and often set in the milieu of working-class people or the petit bourgeoisie. The National Socialists courted Hauptmann as a famous author, despite viewing his socio-critical leanings as highly suspect.
The portrait is by Hauptmann’s eldest son Ivo, a co-founder of the Hamburg Secession.
