This colorful, animated three-dimensional stucco portrait is an excellent example of a decorative architectural element created by the Maya. It would have originally appeared on publicly visible buildings within Late Classic Maya cities. The red, black, and blue pigments applied to this piece conjure visions of a vibrant building. Who the individual portrayed here is unknown. The form of earrings they wear was common among royals and deities. The segmented band across their forehead acted as support for a headdress that is now missing. Captured within the details of the missing headdress would have been information to identify who this individual was and their specific role in Maya society.
