Portrait of a cardinal

The cardinal is facing the viewer, as if we suddenly interrupted the reading of the sheets he’s holding in his hand. Born in Naples, the painter Gaspare Traversi often drew the source for his compositions from contemporary theater, combining prominent physiognomic features with expressive gestures. At the beginning of his career he was probably influenced by Francesco Solimena and his naturalistic and psychological representation of reality.
