Portrait of a Gentleman

American1800-1825

The Walters Art Museum

The Walters Art Museum
Baltimore, United States

Head and shoulders portrait of a young man with dark brown hair, wearing a black coat with white stock tie. The arrangement of hair on the back of this miniature is sadly damaged, but is an elaborate example of its type. The use of gold wire in the form of ears of wheat and half pearls is typical. Miniature painters were often also skilled in working hair.
