This artist moved to Singapore after World War II and became a pioneer figure of modern art in the post-war art scene. Although commonly known for his distinctive paintings of tropical women and customs, he also created many paintings depicting the struggles and suffering of Chinese immigrants around the time he moved to Singapore. This work superbly captures the psychological state of the sitter through her sharp eyes, red lips, decadent ambiance generated by her posture, and the powerful angular lines. The bright palette also reflects the artist's refined modern sensitivity.
