Portrait of a Lady

Paulus Moreelse1627

Mauritshuis

Mauritshuis
Den Haag, Netherlands

At the beginning of the seventeenth century, Moreelse was one of the most important portraitists in Utrecht. Although we do not know the identity of the lady in this portrait, she must have been well-to-do. She is wearing a shiny black dress with gold thread, big gold chains and a stand-up collar of white lace, which Moreelse has painted with great refinement. In her hand she holds a fan of exotic ostrich feathers.
