In 1890, the artist couple P.S. Krøyer and Marie Krøyer travelled around Italy, and one of the places they visited was Civita d'Antonio, a small town 150 km east of Rome. This is where Marie painted the picture of the little Italian girl sitting on a chair. The designation at the bottom of the picture reads: "Oh, what would have become of me, had I not had this sweet little helper."
