Portrait of a Woman

Nicolaes Maes1680

Hallwyl Museum

Hallwyl Museum
Stockholm, Sweden

The composition of the painting is very typical of Maes: a person of consequence in an imaginary garden leaning on an object. His portraits seldom display much closeness to reality but rather were cherished by the viewers and owners as ideal representations of culture, affluence and high rank. This portrait was probably painted about 1680 and would have had a pendant male portrait. The painting is signed MAES in the foreground of the fountain.
