The painting was a present from Wilhelm von Bode, who was the General Director of the Königliche Museen of Berlin since 1905. It is a fragment of a fresco that is attributed to the Florentine painter Filippino Lippi. Due to stylistic particularities the work has often been thought to be a modern forgery. Recent art-technological examination has suggested though that the painting might be a work from the 15th century.
