The
signature and date on this painting emerged only after restoration in 1990,
enabling attribution.
The
portrait dates from the artist's early period, documented from 1533, and is
part of the Venetian tradition of portraiture from the first decades of the
sixteenth century, both for its style and the composition, and for its
iconography. The identity of the sitter is still unknown.
