The relief portrait of Albrecht Dürer comes from the house called 'Cagie (…) Pictura' in the Lange Nieuwstraat. The house belonged to the merchant and amateur artist Cornelis van Dalem (1530–73), who became known for his painted landscapes.
He is said to have created an illustration personifying the art of painting on the upper floor of the front façade: a female figure with a painting easel. This portrait of Dürer stood at her side along with a portrait of Jan Van Eyck as Dürer’s counterpart.
