'I have an appointment for tomorrow with a splendid old man — will he come???' wrote Vincent van Gogh to his brother Theo. He man did, and Van Gogh painted him 'by way of a trial for a portrait.' Vincent wished to practice portraiture, hoping it would bring in some money.
